Highly public spaces allowed for dealing to be camouflaged as panhandling. Transitioning to homelessness: bouncing around of single occupancy hotels, going into the homes of friends and families. Thought to be temporary, going into something better: won"t go into shelters because shelters aren"t safe, disdain and fear of gangs who run them. Life on street is more dangerous for men than for women page 28: rape and murder structural abuse. Neighborhoods segregated by ethnicities: econ boom of and after ww2 made many move for employment. Most visible were middle aged black men. Flip it around and crack users say heroine is a loser drug page 33. They actually get money from welfare prejudges and stereotypes: background of violence. Seen in bus drivers (page 31) warning or avoiding dangerous places. Fights are ended nicely sometimes recognizing theyre high. Authorative violence getting around homelessness not being illegal by issuing a ticket they couldn"t pay to get them into jail: bureaucratic consequences.
