Prime goal is to reconstruct what the past vegetation was like at any time: also plants lie at base of food chain, will provide clues into animal and plant life. Plants usually remain longer than bone and have more of them: more resistant to decomp. Pollen remains palynology study of pollen grains by von post: can be applied to many sites, gives idea about fluctuations.
