ARTHIST 3D03 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3-4: Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, Alphabetical Order, Vernissage
Document Summary
Prior to 1848, the salon was selected by a jury made of 50 members of the acad mie des beaux-arts: 14 pai(cid:374)ters, 8 s(cid:272)ulptors, 8 ar(cid:272)hite(cid:272)ts, 4 e(cid:374)gra(cid:448)ers, 6 (cid:373)usi(cid:272)ia(cid:374)s, (cid:1005)(cid:1004) (cid:862)free(cid:863) a(cid:272)ade(cid:373)ia(cid:374)s ((cid:373)useu(cid:373) administrators, art critics). The jury was abolished in 1848 after the declaration of the second empire and the salon of 1848 was open to all admissions. Jurors were elected by the vote of all exhibitors from 1849-51. In 1852, only artists who had previously exhibited at a. Salon (excluding the salon of 1848) could vote for a juror with the administration reserving the right to appoint the rest. The salon became biennial after 1855 (universal expo), a change that was justified on the grounds that it gave artists more time to work, yet this meant that any artist turned down would have a four year hiatus.
