Roos chapter 8: on the brink of success o o o o o o. Salon of 1869 was last exhibition run b nieuwerkerke and his team. Critics like castagnary attacked the administration as being tyrannical and unnacountable. This view was shared by many others and was a popular view of the government as well. Critics also pointed out that the government had been increasing the amount of art purchases but buying cheaper, second rate paintings. Philippe burty felt the installation of the salon was the worst he had seen. He felt the right to install works and choose spots should be with the artist not the government, and believed the medal system to be useless. By january 1870, the office of fine arts was separated from the crown, now named a ministry. It was detached from museum administration and the control of n3: nieuwerkerke remained but lost control of services relating to fine arts.
