Document Summary

Phospholipids are amphipathic molecules--they have a hydrophilic and hydrophobic region. In solution, they spontaneously form bilayers that are selectively permeable--meaning that only certain substances cross them readily: ions and molecules diffuse spontaneously from regions of high concentration to regions of low concentration. Phospholipids, glycolipids, and some steroids (cholesterol) - membrane structure and function: other steroids - hormones and regulators, triglycerides - food storage, waxes - bee hives and plant leaf surfaces for the protection against h2o loss. Fatscomposed of three fatty acids linked to a three carbon molecule (glycerol: also called triglycerides, form from dehydration reaction between hydroxyl group of glycerol and carboxyl group of a fatty acid, joined by ester linkage. Fatty acids are not monomers and fats are not polymers. Insert figure 6. 3 where are these found? research signi cance? c, d liquid form because of the bends.
