Intuitively is something that involves evolution and involves the sensation of gene flow. When one becomes genetically isolated (no exchange of genes) thus mutations in one species creates differences between 2 species ~ divergence. Reproductively isolated, phylogenetically distinct, and geographic isolation. Barrier to gene flow can be before/after the zygote forms, behavioural, morphological, adaptation or geographic- causes reproductive isolation. Impedes reproduction before the zygote is formed: postzygotic isolation. Should have low levels or no gene flow (starts the clock on speciation) 4 criteria for identifying species in general: ecological species concept, biological species concept. Species are things that can"t have gene flow. Difficult to study if animals are having sex as they may have coitus during the night, underground or in unique positions. Flaw: does not apply to asexual species. Flaw: cannot observe sexual activities of animals: morphospecies concept. Used for the dead or fossil remains.
