Chapter 1: biology and the tree of life. All cells are derived from pre-existing cells. Phylogeny: a diagram that shows relationships among cells/species. All living things are encapsulated in cells. Cells are a tool that life uses to concentrate components and chemicals that facilitate reproduction and energy processing. Zygote the production of the fusion of a sperm and a cell. Implications: related by a common ancestry, exception: the first cell arose from nothing. Species are changeable by time and are related through a common ancestor. Natural selection is essentially a process of the survival of the fittest. Variation: morphology, behaviour, or molecular process that is different amongst individuals. Must influence fitness: the ability of one individual over another to reproduce. Evolution in terms of change influences the changes in allele frequency which is the consequence of different individuals surviving or not. Evolution occurs in populations and not in individuals.
