Document Summary

Readings 9- unit 2 ch 12: molecules of heredity. Transforming molecule = dna: scientists isolated dna from s-strain bacteria, mixed it with r-strain bacteria and produced s-strain bacteria, heating s-strain cells killed them but did not completely destroy their dna. It"s not the number of different nucleotides but their sequence that is important. Genetic information is encoded in the sequence of nucleotides. The 4 nucleotides can be arranged in any order. Each unique sequence represents a unique set of genetic instructions. Dna replications produces 2 dna double helices: each with one original strand (parental strand) and one new strand (daughter strand) Mutations = source of all genetic information. Accurate replication, proofreading and dna repair produce almost error-free dna: some forms of dna polymerase recognize base pairing mistakes, these types of dna polymerase can pause and fix the mistake. Toxic chemicals, radiation, and occasional mistakes during dna replication may cause mutations.
