Epic poetry is not the only kind of poetry in the archaic period. Lyrical poetry = not like epic poetry. Poetry can be recited or sung in different contexts. The difference between lyrical poetry and homeric poetry is tremendous: use all sorts of metres and subject matter to create their poems, much shorter, one of the greatest influences of lyrical poetry = spreading literature. Not relying on memory with lyrical poetry. Lyric poetry = only place in which we see female authors. Symposium = a gathering of like-minded people (friends, social), only men who are at symposiums, food & wine served, games played, always some sort of poetic recitation. War poet often including excitations of bravery in battle. Of the lyric poets he was the most homeric in style (many similar themes of heroism, war) Ethos of praising bravery over all else feeds into the homeric style.
