Chapter 8 (sixth reading): phillip ii, alexander, and macedon: macedonia refers to the geographical region and macedon to the ancient kingdom. The rise of macedon : the greeks had little to fear from outside invaders between 1100 bce and 490 bce. This was due to their northern cousins, the macedonians, whose earliest kingdom was centered on the haliacmon river, which helped give the greeks a block between it, and it"s invaders. They provided the macedonian cavalry, and the king usually lead the cavalry: king granted land called spear land to peasants in exchange for service in a poorly trained infantry. They became known as the pezhetairoi, or foot companions : macedonians were very comfortable with their king and were free to speak their minds. Life was a world of hunting, drinking, and blood feuds. In the aftermath of the persian"s scythian campaign, the macedonians became persian vassals.
