Perception: is the process of interpreting the messages to our senses to provide order and meaning to the environment. Perception helps sort out and organize the complex and varied input received by our senses of sight, smell, touch, taste and hearing. People base their opinions on their interpretation of reality, not reality itself. Most important perception is the perception organizational members have of each other. Components of perception: the perceiver, the target and the situation. (three parts) The perceiver: perceivers experience, needs, emotions afects their perception of the target. Past experiences lead the perceiver to develop expectations. Needs unconsciously inluence perception, we perceive what we want to perceive. Ex/ lonely people might perceive actions of the opposite sex as taking an interest in them. Emotions such as anger, happiness, and fear inluence perception. Perceptual system serves to defend us against unpleasant emotions. Perceptual defense: we only see/hear things we want to, everything else gets blocked out.
