Perceptual defense - tendency for the perceptual system to avoid or defend against unwanted emotions. Other people are also categorized in the same way, and they tend to assume that those in the same group have similar attributes. People tend to perceive their own social group as more positive and superior than other groups. Perception is selective - not all cues are used, and some are given emphasis. Perceptual constancy - tendency for target to be perceived in the same way over time. Perceptual consistency - tendency to select, ignore , and distort certain cues.
