Document Summary

Two hardware devices determine the quality of the image displayed on the monitor: the monitor itself and the video controller. Monochrome monitors display only one colour against a contrasting background. Grayscale monitors display varying intensities of gray against a white background. Used in low-end portable systems, especially handheld computers. Colour monitors can display anywhere form 16 to 16 million colours. Uses a large vacuum tube called a cathode ray tube. Near the back of a monochrome or greyscale monitor housing is an electron gun. It shoots a beam of electrons through a magnetic coil, which aims the beam at the front of the monitor. The monitor"s screen is coated with phosphors (chemicals that glow when they are struck by the electron beam) organized into a grid of dots. The smallest number of phosphor dots the gun can focus on is a pixel. The gun systematically aims at every pixel at the screen from the top left to the bottom right.
