COMMERCE 1BA3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Dvd Recorder, Bbeb, Head Crash
Document Summary
The purpose of storage devices is to hold data so it can be used whenever it is needed. Reading/retrieving data then transferring it into the computer"s memory. Storage media are the physical materials on which data is stored. Storage devices are the hardware components that write data to/read it from storage media. Disks, hard disks, floppies, and tape drives all use similar techniques for writing and reading data since they all use the same medium. Their surfaces are coated with a magnetically sensitive material (iron oxide) that reacts to a magnetic field. Diskettes have a single thin disk (usually plastic) and stores data to both sides (side 0 and 1) Each side has its own read/write head. Hard disks usually contain multiple disks (called platters because they"re made of a rigid material) Something is polarized when its ends have opposite magnetic polarity. The orientation of a magnetic field can be used to represent data.
