Benefits that we see today as a result of trade/labour unions include minimum wage, vacations, holidays, and pension plans. Organized labour began in the early 1800s on the wharves of halifax, st. john"s, and quebec to profit from labour scarcity. Unions were illegal until 1872 and it was a long and bloody road as some strike leaders were beaten, jailed, or shot. Craft unions (organized by trade, usually skilled workers) were formed in the 1830s to protect pay, hours, conditions, and job security. Industrial unions were created to represent certain workers that were unskilled and semi-skilled in mass production industries such as automobile manufacturing and mining. Note: while not unions, there are professional organizations/associations (e. g. , mcmaster university faculty association or the ontario.
