Interprocess communication - communicating and interacting with processes on other devices connected by networks. Computer network - medium for communication that connects hosts to exchange data and resources. Examples of hosts: a computer, smartphone, network printer, etc. A network is like a graph structure consisting of nodes connected by edges. Internal nodes perform network functions and can include hubs, switches, bridges, routers, gateways. Smaller networks may have a simple topology( simple connection shape/geometry) where you may not be able to tell the difference between internal and terminal notes. Some include ring, star, fully connected, bus, line. Desire to use the telephone"s analog network to transmit digital data. Acoustic modem - a user connects a modem to a terminal and dial the number of a remote computer, then talk to the office computer from home. The internet connects computer networks using the internet protocol (ip) The internet evolved from the arpanet, a us department of defense advanced research.
