Urban centers are places which consume food and other goods and services, and process and produce goods and materials, they also distribute goods and services. They are functionally connected to other urban centers and to the surrounding non-urban area. Velocity is greatest on the outside of the curves thus causing erosion and the formation of a cutbank. Over time, the meanders get wider and the river lengthens. They transport water that has fallen onto land toward the oceans. If precipitation does not infiltrate into the soil, it flows along the surface (this is called runoff). Eventually the runoff will reach a stream (if it does not evaporate first) It is determined by calculating the change in elevation over the distance the river flows. The slope of a river is shown on a longitudinal profile. In higher elevations, the gradient is often steep (e. g. at the headwaters of the river).
