EARTHSC 2GG3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Soil Fertility, Sub-Saharan Africa, Gender Equality
Document Summary
Chapter 1: natural disaster and the human population. Hazard: phenomenon that causes problems for people. Not considered a hazard if no people are involved. Many natural disasters are encouraged by human activities. Geological hazards: entirely natural causes, from deep within the earth. Table 1. 2: the 40 deadliest natural disasters 1970-2017 (top 10 shown) 1964-1968: 1 person in 10 000 killed by a natural disaster. 2000-2004: 1 person in 100 000 killed by a natural disaster. There is a 10 fold difference in these values but the hazards are not distributed uniformly. Areas with high population have an increased probability of disasters. 1964-2004: 80% of deaths occurred in 15 countries, share some commonalities. On average 87% below median democracy index, and 73% below median gdp. Countries that are less democratic and poorer are more likely to have significant impact from disasters. In the year 822, a massive eruption buried nearby cities. Today 100 000 people live at its base.
