Document Summary

Intellectual property: the ideas and creations produced by others and ourselves: how these are used is an ethical issue, laws also apply to the tangible results of creativity. This is for the protection and benefit of creator and society. Intellectual property here will refer to any creative material that has been put into tangible form: that is, pure ideas are not included. Property that the exclusive ownership has been established is said to be proprietary. Federal laws and agreements with other countries set the legal rules regarding intellectual property: 6 types of interest to us: Patents: the right to exclude others from making, using, or selling the invention. Copyrights: the right to copy, produce, reproduce, perform, publish, adapt, communicate, and otherwise use literary, dramatic, musical, or artistic work, including computer programs. Industrial designs: the right to prevent competitors from imitating the shape, pattern, or ornamentation applied to a useful, mass produced article.
