Proposal made by the lafayette in july, due to events in paris (fall of bastille), changed the direction of the revolution. Subcommittee edited document to 17 articles like american declaration compromise statement. Statement of enlightenment principles governing both individual roles & ultimate source of all government. Representative of the french people contempt of the rights of man sole cause of public misfortunes and government corruption. Resolved to set forth the sacred rights of man. Demands of the citizens always tend towards maintaining the constitution. Following rights of man and the citizen: men are born and remain free and equal in rights. Social distinctions may be based only on common utility: purpose of all political association is preserve natural rights of man. Women not included as representatives of revolutionary france.
