The world (rich and poor), specifically canada, has a growing rate of older people in society. This number is expected to keep growing affecting programs, social systems and all of society. Demographers who study population change use at least 3 measures of population aging: # of older people in population, median age of a population, proportion of older people in population. Increase in any of these 3 signifies a population aging. A society is old or aging if a large # and high proportion of people are older. Older adults are increasing and children are decreasing. 4. 7% in 1921 and 14. 4% in 2011 (proportion of older people) Due to high birth rate and increasing life expectancy. Middle aged people may struggle to support dependent young and old. Hiv/aids kills middle aged leaving less caregivers. Older people may have to look after grandchildren. Older people are living longer but they may live in poverty.
