They should not be used to ask why questions. Surveys ask the same questions in the same order and in the same way. Researchers use questions as control variables to ensure causality typically achieved with temporal order and alternative explanations. Deductive approach used - start with theory. Steps in survey research: develop instrument - questionnaire etc. The interview schedule are the questions given to respondents: plan how to record data. Pilot-test it on a few respondents and asks them whether the meaning of the questions are clear: decide target population. Sample is drawn: locate respondents and give them instructions. Thank respondents and organize data for statistical analysis. Each respondent, questionnaire and interviewer is tracked, eg. by id number on questionnaire: enter data. Completed surveys are checked against a list of sampled respondents. Next responses on questionnaires are reviewed, original ques stored and information transferred to statistical analysis: do report. Measure each variable with more than one question.
