Document Summary

Homeostasis: is the condition of equilibrium(balance) in the body"s internal environment due to the constant interaction of regulatory systems: homeo = sameness | stasis = still. Example: blood glucose range 70-110ml of glucose/100ml of blood. Extracellular(ecf): outside of body cells: ecf differs based on where it occurs in the body. Examples: blood plasma, lymph, cerebrospinal fluid, synovial fluid, aqueous humour, and vitreous body: interstitial: ecf between cells and tissues. Proper functioning of body is dependent on this. Imbalances can occur due to physical(internal and external) and psychological stresses. Nervous system and endocrine systems work at correcting imbalances: nervous: send nerve impulses(action potentials, endocrine: glands secrete hormones(messenger molecules) slower process. Cycle of events that monitor a body condition, change, re-monitor and revaluate. Stimulus: disruption that changes a controlled condition. Three basic components: receptor: monitors change sends input to a control center. Typical input is nerve impulse: control centre: sets range of values(set point) evaluates input and generates output when necessary.
