Role of nurse is to ensure prescribed medications are delivered in a safe manner. Nurse is expected to understand pharmacotherapeutic principles for all medications given to each patient. Before administering get information about medical history, physical assessment, disease processes, and learning needs and capabilities: growth and developmental factors should be considered. A major goal of studying pharmacology is to limit the number and severity of adverse drug effects: many adverse drug effects are preventable, some, however, are not. The five rights of drug aminstration are: right patient, right mediation, right dose, right route of administration, right time of delivery. The three checks of drug administration: check drug with mar when removing it from drawer, check drug when preparing it, check drug before administering it to patient. Although nurse is accountable for preparing and administering meds, safe drug practices are a result of multidisciplinary endeavors: responsibility lies with multiple people, computer or scanning bar code does not replace checks.
