HTHSCI 2RR3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Knowledge Economy, Social Economy, Virtual Community
Document Summary
Knowledge economy translates into the development of "projects" In this context, the intelligence of a business is a function of the "skill network" it contains, not only the skills of its individual employees. Both young people entering the labour market and those undergoing a career change must face new labour market realities - determined by the knowledge economy. Knowledge economy businesses bring into question the advantages of internal markets and allow individuals to develop skills and careers within an organization. Horizontal ladder - seen as non-promotion and non-career moves. Team work, mobile work, networks, virtual communities of practice. Variable intensity of employment: part-time, contract, casual work. Boundaryless careers can make us question the concept of "active labour force" because of the diversity of the labour forms today. Various forms of work: third sector, social economy, volunteer, non- governemntal, informal. The concepts of unemployment, inactivity and active participation are questioned, while a range of employment and unpaid work gain legitimacy.
