The sex with the higher cost of care should provide less care, because its net benefit of care will be smaller. In fact, we can predict that the less certain the paternity, the less care will be provided by males. After the removal period, all males quickly returned to their mate: results: experimental: half of them removed the first egg laid by their mate from the nest, which was then destroyed by predators. Because the pair copulates often during egg laying, the (cid:373)ale"s certainty of paternity for subsequent eggs should be high. In sum, male boobies reduce parental care, even to the point of egg destruction, when their paternity is uncertain.
