Word -form of a word + meaning, something that links a form with a meaning. Words are free because they can appear in isolation. Words can be part of the start, middle or end of a sentence. Words are inseparable, meaning that you can"t insert items into it. Morpheme - smallest unit that pairs a consistent form with a consistent meaning. Some morphemes are free, and can appear in isolaiton. Bound morphemes- must be attached to another morpheme. Polymorphic - made up of more than one morpheme. Usually made up of a root with one or more affixes. Allomorph - forms that are related but slightly different, depending on the environment. Inflectional morphemes - add grammatical information to a word, retains its core meaning. Derivation - process of creating a new word, usually with a similar meaning/category of the base word. Usually prefixes does not lead to a category change, while suffixing does usually ( from verb to adjective)
