Document Summary
This system of conscription attempts to represent each sound of human speech with a single symbol. Anyone who hears a language spoken for the first time finds it hard to break up the flow of speech into individual units. We do not focus attention on individual sounds as much as we do on the meanings of words, phrases, and sentences. The ipa represents speech in the form of segments- individual phones like [p], [s], or. Segments are produced by coordinating a number of individual articulatory gestures including jaw movement, lip shape, and tongue placement. Segment is defined as an individual speech sound. Error in speech production provide one kind of evidence for the existence of segments. Slips of the tongue such as melcome wat for welcome mat, show segments are individual units of linguistic structure that should be represented individually in a system of transcription. Sound is produced when air is set in motion.
