Derivational affixes - letters/structures that can occur at either the beginning or the end of a word (e. g un+law+ful) Collocations - patterns of words that occur together. Lexical semantics - are of linguistics concerned with the study of the meaning of individual words. Lexicographers - create dictionaries, developed methodologies for discovering the meaning of words and presenting them to dictionary users. Co-hyponyms - words whose meanings are included in the meaning of the more general word. Componential analysis - breaking down words into their component parts and assigning them sematic features( meanings) (e. g puppy and infant share the feature "newly born") Word formation processes - how new vocabulary are added to a language. Words also have a pointing function, known as deixis meaning to point or show. Referential, spatial, temporal deixis e. g spatial deixis indicated by in,on,this,that Grammatical meaning - meaning derived from phrases, clauses, and sentences.
