MEDRADSC 2S03 Chapter Notes - Chapter 25: Masseter Muscle, Parotid Gland, Stereotactic Surgery
Document Summary
Make and release saliva, which contains water, electrolytes, mucus and enzymes. Exocrine glands - release saliva into ducts. Helps prevent infections of the mouth and throat. Parotid tumours in children tend to be malignant more often than parotid tumours in adults. Benign tumours average age 40 years. Malignant tumours average age 55 years. Can involve nerves in the face and neck. Spread to lymph nodes based on head and neck drainage patterns. Incidence of cervical ln involvement varies depending on histological subtype. Biopsy may be a fine needle aspiration biopsy. Ultrasound (to guide biopsy and assess gland and nodes) Ct and mr cannot distinguish between benign and malignant but can be used for assessing spread. Pet may be used to look for distant metastases. Location (sublingual, minor salivary glands, submandibular worse than parotid) Superficial parotidectomy - removes part of parotid gland. Total parotidectomy - removes all of parotid gland. Wide excision - treats sublingual and minor salivary gland tumours.
