Usually best to analyse existing quantitative data rather than collecting new data: known as systematic review; process of selecting, evaluating and synthesizing all available evidence, or meta-analysis; statistical approach to combining data derived from a systematic review. Primary study; collection of new data more time consuming and expensive but more control over factors (source pop. , content and wording of questionnaire) Case report describes one pt. case series describes a group of people with the same disease/have gone thru the same procedure. Focus on individuals (cases) with a particular disease (along with case - control) same signs and/or symptoms of disease. Can be used if goal is to understand the populations, to describe patterns ot to ask research questions that are not focused on causality best design would be observational (so cohort or cross sectional) Purpose is to measure the proportion of a population with a particular exposure or disease.
