Appearance or disappearance of music at a precise moment can influence the audience"s emotion. Opening and closing music provide a musical frame for the film as a whole. Opening credits: sets mood for movie, alert the audience (brass, presenting music themes that will appear throughout. Closing credits: reflect the mood at the end of the film, reprise musical ideas that were presented throughout the film. Meant to precede the beginning of the film. Immediately precedes the resumption of the film after the intermission (kind of like an overture) Heard by both the characters within the narrative and the film audience. Also known as source music, direct music or foreground music. Functions include: establishing time and place, creating a sense of realism and immediacy, offering ironic comment. Known as source music or direct music. Referred to as the score, underscore or background music. Normally original composed for the specific film (original score)
