198 views8 pages

Document Summary

The goal of cancer treatment is cure, control, or palliation. Factors determining the therapeutic approach include the cell type of the cancer, the location and size of the tumour, and the extent of the disease. The client"s physiological and psychological status and personal desires are also important elements in determining the treatment plan. Evidence-informed treatment guidelines have been developed to guide treatment decisions. When caring for the client with cancer, the nurse should know the goals of the treatment plan to communicate with and support the client. When cure is the goal, treatment that has the greatest likelihood of disease eradication is offered. Many kinds of cancer have the potential for permanent remission with an initial course of treatment or with treatment that extends for several weeks, months, or years. Basal cell carcinoma of the skin is usually cured by surgical removal of the lesion or by several weeks of radiation therapy.
