PHILOS 1E03 Chapter Epictetus: Readings 4 – Epictetus "Enchiridion"
Document Summary
Things we are responsible for are naturally free, unconstrained and unimpeded while things we are not responsible for are frail inferior and subject to restraint. Whenever you are planning an action, mentally rehearse what the plan of action entails. It is not events that disturb people, but it is their own judgements concerning these events: ex: death = not scary, judgements of death = scary. Don"t pride yourself on any assets but your own. When something in life calls for us, we must be prepared to leave behind things that we find important. Don"t hope that events will turn out the way you want: instead, welcome events in whichever way they happen, this is the path to peace. Sickness is a problem for the body, not the mind: say this to yourself in whatever circumstances and you will find that the problem pertains to something else, and not to you.
