It provides compensation for people who have been injured, or whose property has been damaged by the wrongdoing of others. It is an area of private law: it constantly evolves to keep up with technological / social issues, has been used by an increasing number of victims of crime to help them seek justice. Also at the centre of high profile cases (ex: child abuse and liability of gov"t for failing to protect citizens_ Purpose of tort law = not to punish wrongdoers but to provide damages to victims as compensation for their losses. Affects every aspect of our society and its people: all individuals who have a duty to care. Most are judge-made but some originates in statutes that vary in each province. Does not involve the state (like criminal law) used solely by individuals. Is not the same as contract law (parties have not necessarily agreed to certain terms / conditions)
