Document Summary

Psychology is relatively new, it has been around since the 1860"s. Our central nervous system is made up of the brain and spinal cord. The peripheral nervous system consists of all the remaining nerves in the body. There are no pain receptors on the brain, only on the skull/scalp itself. Neurons comprise about half of the cells of the brain. There are about 60-100 billion and are interconnected. Neurons generate electrochemical messages that are the basis of mind and behaviour. Reductionists believe that all mental phenomena can be reduced to the electrochemistry of the brain and its wiring diagram. Some diseases cause certain abnormal brain activity, instead of vice-versa, leaving their real causes unexplained. Not very detailed, likened to listening to a football game outside a stadium. A computer builds a 3d image of the brain structures by combining many x-ray cross-sections. Used for diagnosing changes in brain structure from disease or injury.
