PSYCH 1X03 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Phoneme, Onomatopoeia, Complex Differential Form
Document Summary
Every day, you communicate by sending and receiving information. You use spoken and written words to communicate with the people are you to convey your thoughts, feelings and needs. However, communication is by no means limited to just words and language. Communication occurs across all animal species in a wide variety of ways. Humans are unique in their use of the most complex form of communication- language. According to operational definitions of language accepted by most psychologists, no other species of animals except for humans can use language. Language is a uniquely human form of communication that involves arbitrary associations, is productive, and is rule-governed: The words we use for concepts are arbitrarily assigned. The words we use to represent objects are not constrained by any characteristics of the object itself, allowing the word chosen to be completely arbitrary. These words attempt to imitate the natural sounds to reflect their meanings.
