Based on physical characteristics of stimuli and allows that information to continue on for further processing. Job = to shadow message in attended ear by repeating back the message. Put on headphones + listen to a different message in each ear. Only information that is attended is filtered through for deeper processing. Most subjects could process no information from the unattended ear.
