PSYCH 1X03 Chapter Chapter 6, Section 5: Readings 14 – Influence of Groups
Document Summary
Norman triplett: conducted first formal study of social psychology, found that cyclists clocked faster times when cycling with others than when cycling along. The mere presence of others can facilitate performance. However, sometimes the presence of others inhibits performance. The presence of other people increases arousal (zajonc) For simple tasks, arousal tends to improve performance; for complex tasks, it inhibits performance. Instructed people to shout and clap as loud as you can , either alone or among a group of people. Was guessed that individuals would be less inhibited and therefore louder with others than alone. However, people produced 1. 3 less noise when they believed they were with others than alone. These results demonstrate the phenomenon of social loafing: we tend to expend less effort when we believe our contribution will be averaged among others. Asked whether groups are more cautious than individuals.
