Various language stimuli represent different meanings and concepts. Different oral languages, different types of stimuli for the same meaning. All languages relevant stimuli not necessarily concrete examples, rather represent the concept as a whole. Physically indicate the item you want = involves concrete item. Ask for the item, without it present at the time = symbol that represents item. Communicating with symbols opens the possibility to communicate about complex ideas and hypothetical concepts. Allows us to discuss objects we might never directly see, only exist in theory. Language = arbitrary associations: other forms of communication do not involve arbitrary associations. Onomatopoeia = words with sounds which are associated with their meanings: same source of natural sounds, various languages apply slightly different words to familiar animal calls.
