The neuraxis refers to a line that is drawn down the spinal cord and through the brain towards the front. In most species, the neuraxis is a straight line. However, in humans, it bends towards the front. Rostral: towards the head: dorsal: top ad back of the head (structures above neuraxis, ventral: face the ground, medial: closer to the midline. Franz joseph galls(cid:8217)s theory of phrenology states that different brain functions were located in different areas. This theory was not based on with scientific evidence. He also said that higher order brain processes were used by sub-organs. The sub-organs grew in response to the use of the facility. The growth of the brain could elucidate the use of sub-organs. If certain brain area is damaged or removed (lesion), and a certain function malfunctions, then that area of the brain and that function are associated. Pierre florens ablated parts of pigeons and studied the effects on behaviour.
