Many research focused on childhood because so many enormous and fundamental changes are concentrated in this period of our lives. We will never stop growing and developing but the speed, magnitude and scope if changes (cid:449)o(cid:374)(cid:859)t e(cid:448)er (cid:271)e as great as it is during our early years. Section 1: research method with the long view. Most commonly used as a research method in developmental psychology than in most areas of psychology. Helps deal with the fact that we frequently cannot manipulate a variable of interest ex age, gender. So instead of making pointless attempt to randomly assign subjects to different levels of that variable, we simply group our subjects based on their existing level (grouping 3-year-olds together and 4-year-olds together). Cannot make same kind of cause and effect interpretation of our data that a true experiment allows because we are not randomly assigning groups. Subjects are grouped based on existing levels of a variable (age, gender)
