Development: concerned with entire lifespan of living things. 2 basic kinds of questions about development: descriptive/normative: about how things normally change from age to age. What is the individual capable of at any given age: analytic: about the processes and variables that are responsible for the changes in abilities and needs from age to age. Why does change occur: passage of time is an important variable. Advantage: eliminate a lot of extraneous variables (evs) comparing subjects to themselves. Disadvantages: time-consuming, costly, subjects may be lost over time (death, moving away, refusal to continue, etc. : sry gene located on 23rd chromosome is responsible for determining sex female = xx/male = xy sex determined by contribution of male: cascade gene model genes sex determined by contribution of male and female. Rooting reflex: close mouth on whatever it touches and suck on it. Most people develop according to an orderly sequence of genetically determined biological growth processes (maturation)
