Document Summary
Unit 1: intro to the neural control of behaviour. A typical cortical neuron can have b/t 1-10,000 connections w/ other neurons. The mind was seen as a separate entity existing outside our biology, yet in control of our actions & thoughts (mental processes) The brain was thought to serve, in part, as a connection b/t the mind & body (physical processes) The neuron (the fundamental building block of the nervous system) 2 siblings (1 girl, jill & 1 boy phil) that are completely different. Jill plays life safe & only enters the danger zone once in awhile. Phil went skydiving for his birthday (risk taker) Cells of your body are specialized for different functions (i. e some secrete hormones, others join to form protective barriers like your skin) Each of the 100 billion neurons in the brain are organized into signaling pathways to communicate via synaptic transmission. What makes neurons especially good at communication is their unique structure.
