Document Summary
Outline: basic principles of piaget"s theory, stages of cognitive development, piaget"s contributions to child. Assimilation occurs when new experiences are readily incorporated into a child"s existing theories. Accommodation occurs when a child"s theories are modi ed based on experience. That is, children nd they can readily assimilate most experiences into their existing theories, but occasionally they need to accommodate their theories to adjust to new experiences periodically interrupted by disequilibrium. Disequilibrium occurs children recognize their theories to return to a state of equilibrium, a process piaget called equilibrium. The sensorimotor stage spans birth to two years old, a period in which the infant progresses from simple re ex actions to symbolic processing. 24 months of this stage, infants" thinking progresses remarkably along three important fronts. Newborns respond re exively to many still, but between one and four months re exes are rst modi ed by experience.
