Self control: ability to regulate behaviour, inhibit impulses. > is not perfect, even child high in self control may give in sometimes. 1 year; aware people have expectations and must follow rules. > includes concerns for safety, socialization rules ie, don"t touch, thats hot! . 2 year; internalized some rules, can somewhat contain themselves unsupervised. 3 year; become capable of self-regulation: can form strategies to inhibit behaviour ie. when inhibiting snatching a toy off another kid i don"t really want that toy anyways . Delay of gratification: tests child"s ability to control themselves ie. marshmallow test. Shows that although we see control in toddlers, its a skill that continues to develop through childhood. > high self control = high grades later on, high se, less likely to abuse drugs.
