Identify a question to be answered or phenomenon to be understood. Form hypothesis that is possible answer or explanation. Select method for collecting data to evaluate hypothesis. Using one of four approaches: observing systematically, using tasks to sample behaviour, asking children for self-reports, measuring physiological responses. Involves watching children and carefully recording what they do or say. Naturalistic observation observe as they behave spontaneously in some real-life situation. Must decide which variables to record beforehand. Settings for structured cannot disturb behavior of interest knowing they"re being watched can change their behaviour i. e. putting a camera in someone"s face may cause them to be shy or to pose. Observer bias researcher notices behaviours that support hypothesis and ignores those that do not or interpret behaviour in a way that it supports the hypothesis expectancy effect observer"s expectancies influence their observations. Can be overcome by blind observation having someone who does not know the hypothesis make the observations.
