38 views2 pages

Document Summary

These chemicals carry information to nearby neurons: synapse- the gap between one neuron and the next. Neurotransmitters travel from in the synapse when they leave the terminal button and go to the dendrite of another neuron. 50-100 billion neurons and you have the beginnings of a brain. Wrinkled surface of the brain is called the cerebral cortex. It is divided into two hemispheres (right and left). The two hemispheres are attached by millions of axons in a thick bundle called the corpus callosum. Right- artistically and musical abilities, perception of spatial relationships, ability to recognize faces and emotions. Frontal cortex- personality and ability to make and carry out plans. At 3 weeks after conception, neural plate forms. At 4 weeks, the plate forms to form a tube that eventually becomes the brain and spinal cord. Neurons are produced in one small region of the neural tube. Production of neurons begins at 10 weeks after conception.
