Genetic heritage vs. experiences in life, nurture impacts nature. How much of our personality is known to us. What extent is our behaviour due to our personality. Nomothetic (interested in individual as a representative of the whole), idiographic (to understand the individual not as a representation) Theories don"t guide research tend to be explanatory. Historic role in personality theory development, influential in past. Perspective: set of general answers to questions about personality. Whatever makes for consistency in our behaviour. Whatever is responsible for individual differences in behaviour. We should not be disturbed by the fact that there are multiple personality theories. Don"t think of them as right or wrong, there"s not one truth. Theory: specific set of answers to questions. Type approach: limited number of distinct personality types. Emphasis on biological bases of personality, not focused on environment. Oldest approach the four humors: blood, yellow bile, phlegm, black. Each personality with a built in excess.
