Chapter 7: personality stability, development and change: people change yet fundamental traits remain consistent, changing personality on purpose is difficult. Personality development: personality development: increase in the mean level of a trait over time. Cross-sectional studies: cross-sectional study: surveys people at different ages. Longitudinal study: same people are repeatedly measured over the years from childhood through adulthood. Causes of personality development: changes in responsibilities are associated with changes in personality. Social clock: places strong pressures on all people to accomplish certain things by certain ages. The development of narrative identity: every individual develops three aspects of personality one on top of another. If being with someone is a hassle, they are pretty good at avoiding him: young people with life threatening illnesses also appear to shift their goals from exploration to emotional well being. The desire for change: neuroticism is the trait most want to change. Psychotherapy: can produce long term behaviour change.
